Here you will find lesson plans, professional development opportunities, and public events all designed to get students productively talking about political issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A word about discussion: <\/strong>Teachers often imagine discussion as a whole-class discussion in which students are primarily answering the teacher\u2019s questions. We think about discussion using Hess and McAvoy\u2019s (2015) criteria for \u201cbest practice discussion\u201d:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An open public policy question, often framed as \u201cShould we do ____?\u201d Example: \u201cShould we increase the federal minimum wage?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students adhere to agreed upon norms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students have learned about the issue before the discussion.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students give reasons to each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All students participate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This sort of discussion is student-centered and focused on getting young people talking to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The building blocks for good discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you explore the site you will find materials for a number of discussion strategies, like: the <a href=\"https:\/\/pz.harvard.edu\/resources\/tug-of-war\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pz.harvard.edu\/resources\/tug-of-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tug of War<\/a>, Structured Academic Controversy and other forms of deliberative engagement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wolf Discussion Engagement Network (DEN) is a resource for teachers interested in using structured discussion activities to teach students about contemporary public policy issues.
