Loving Yourself: Caring for Your Heart and Health by Staying True to Your Heritage! By A’Laure Pope & Helen Foster
The month of February highlights numerous events, two of which are discussed below: American Heart Month and Black History Month.
Heart health is incredibly important, especially as we think about Valentine’s Day and the significance it holds. Caring for your heart doesn’t just mean celebrating with a partner or a loved one. It can be taking yourself out on a solo date, practicing self-care, exercising, going for a walk, or having a Galentine’s Day with your friends.

Heart health is just as important as your emotional and physical health. It can look like connecting with your community, celebrating your heritage, attending cultural events, or spending time with people who make you feel supported and valued. Joy, belonging, and support are just as heart-productive as workouts.
There are so many ways to improve your health that help with clarity and feeling more grounded. This can be allowing yourself to slow down by taking rests, breaks, unplugging from social media, or meditating. Additionally, if you are more creative and artsy, it might look like painting, gardening, creating crafts, or sewing!

Below are some resources and activities in North Carolina that promote heart health!
The Raleigh Parks Health & Wellness Program offers several events (little to no cost) such as fitness classes, nutrition workshops, and stress management techniques.
Some trails that assist with becoming attuned with nature and unplugging are:
Durant Nature Preserve
- Offers five trails across 237 acres, picnic shelters, volleyball courts, and a playground
- 8305 Camp Durant Rd, Raleigh, NC 27614
Gipson Play Plaza
- Offers a sensory maze, picnic area, sand bowl, waterfall areas, and climbing towers/bridges
- 715 Biggs Dr, Raleigh, NC 27603
Eno River State Park
- Offers over 15 different trails, historic sites, river access/fishing spots, and picnic areas
- 6101 Cole Mill Road, Durham, NC 27705
Black History Month
In addition to heart health, February also recognizes Black History Month. Similarly to heart health, individuals’ beliefs and practices to honor Black History may differ. People can participate in celebrating Black history by attending museums, spending time outdoors with family and friends, listening to local artists, or supporting small businesses.
Individuals who participate in Black history focus on self-love, cultural pride, awareness, and community. Celebrating Black history can be a form of wellness, both emotional and cultural, by embracing one’s identity, celebrating cultural wisdom, and reclaiming joy. February invites us to care for our hearts in several aspects: physical/emotional/spiritual health, connection, taking breaks, and prioritizing our beliefs and values.
